Habib Beye prepares for Rennes reunion with Marseille

Habib Beye will return to face his former club Stade Rennais FC as Marseille manager in the final Ligue 1 matchday, bringing his past as a player against the Breton side back into focus ahead of the meeting at the Vélodrome.

The former defender, who previously had spells with both Olympique de Marseille and Strasbourg during his playing career, faced Rennes 15 times in total, recording seven victories, three draws and five defeats.

Beye’s history against Rennes includes several notable wins during his time in France’s top flight, particularly while representing Marseille.

He claimed six of those victories with Marseille, including a 2-0 win in 2003 and a 3-1 success in 2005, before adding two more 2-0 wins during the 2006-2007 season, when he also captained the side.

One of his standout results against Rennes came in the Coupe de France semi-final, where Marseille secured a 3-0 victory.

Before his time at Marseille, Beye also recorded a win against Rennes while playing for Strasbourg, a 2-1 result in 1999.

However, his record against the Breton club was not entirely positive, with three draws and five defeats across his career.

Among those setbacks were a 3-0 loss with Strasbourg in 2000 and a narrow 4-3 defeat while playing for Marseille in 2004.

Now in the dugout rather than on the pitch, Beye approaches this latest encounter from a different perspective, leading Marseille into a crucial final-day fixture against the side he once regularly faced as a player.

The fixture at the Vélodrome adds further narrative weight to the end of the Ligue 1 season, with Beye’s personal history against Rennes forming part of the backdrop to the contest.

While his playing record shows a balanced but competitive history against the Breton club, attention now turns to how he will fare in his new role on the touchline in one of French football’s most closely followed fixtures.
