Haaland header gives Manchester City narrow win over Coventry

Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Coventry City, secured by a first-half header from Erling Haaland.

Haaland’s goal lifted Manchester City to nine points from three matches and kept them at the top of the Premier League table. Coventry City remain without a point and sit 19th.

The result also brought up Haaland’s 300th club-career goal. His strike was his 165th for Manchester City and made Coventry City the 24th different team he has scored against in the Premier League.

The Norway international has now scored against every Premier League side he has faced except Sunderland and Hull City.

Manchester City manager started with Haaland leading the attack alongside Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo. Nico O’Reilly was named in the starting line-up but suffered an injury during the warm-up, with Enzo Fernandez taking his place for his first appearance since moving from Chelsea to Manchester City.

Taiwo Awoniyi started in attack for Coventry City.

Coventry made the brighter start and created the first significant opportunity after eight minutes. Awoniyi struck a powerful effort from inside the penalty area, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was equal to it and made the save.

Haaland then tested the Coventry goalkeeper in the 16th minute with a ferocious shot from inside the box.

Manchester City came close again seven minutes later when Rayan Cherki produced a determined individual move. He beat a Coventry defender before sending his effort against the left post, with the ball rebounding out of play.

The visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Semenyo delivered an accurate cross into the area and Haaland met it with a fine header, guiding the ball into the Coventry net.

Haaland had the chance to double Manchester City’s advantage shortly before half-time. His powerful strike in the 44th minute was kept out by the Coventry goalkeeper, who prevented his side from falling further behind.

Coventry responded positively after the interval and nearly equalised in the 48th minute. Iliman Ndiaye headed towards goal, but the goalkeeper produced another important save to protect Manchester City’s lead.

Haaland remained a threat at the other end and went close to adding a second in the 79th minute. After receiving a pass from Ndiaye, he sent a low shot towards goal, but the Coventry goalkeeper dealt with it impressively.

Manchester City held on to claim their third consecutive Premier League victory, although Coventry’s resistance made it a far closer contest than the final score suggested.

Manchester City will face Manchester United in the Manchester derby next Sunday. Coventry City will host Brighton in the same round of fixtures on Sunday.
