Mamadou Samassa Extends Guingamp Stay Until 2017 Despite Recent Controversy
Malian international goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa has extended his contract with En Avant Guingamp, committing his future to the Ligue 1 side until June 2017.
The 24-year-old, who has made seven starts for Guingamp so far in the 2014–2015 season, signed a two-year extension on Monday, as confirmed by the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP), the official players’ union.
Samassa, known for his agility and strong presence in goal, has impressed in recent appearances for the Breton club, despite being at the centre of controversy just last week. The former Le Mans and Marseille shot-stopper was shown a red card following an emotional outburst directed at a referee during a Ligue 1 fixture — a moment that drew attention across French football.
The incident saw Samassa visibly frustrated after a contentious decision and confronting the match official. Footage from the match also captured Ivorian defender Benjamin Angoua attempting to intervene and prevent the referee from awarding a penalty to their opponents.
While the disciplinary episode overshadowed an otherwise solid campaign for the Malian, the club appears to have full confidence in his abilities and long-term value. Guingamp have decided to stand by the player, extending his stay for two more seasons.
