Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy etched his name into club history on Saturday after guiding his team to a commanding 3-0 win over Holstein Kiel on the final day of the Bundesliga season — a victory that sealed Dortmund’s qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The 28-year-old Guinean international wasted no time setting the tone for the afternoon, converting a penalty in just the third minute to open the scoring.
That goal took his Bundesliga tally to 21 for the season, making him the first player in Borussia Dortmund history to reach the 20-goal milestone in his debut league campaign.
Guirassy’s accomplishment is even more remarkable considering the calibre of strikers who have previously worn Dortmund colours.
His tally surpasses the debut Bundesliga campaigns of both Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland. Lewandowski managed only eight goals during his first season in 2010-11, while Haaland—who joined midway through the 2019-20 season—scored 13.
Guirassy’s 21 goals, all in regular league play, mark a standout first year with the club since arriving from Stuttgart last summer.
While Haaland did go on to score 27 goals in his first full Bundesliga season in 2020-21, Guirassy’s immediate impact has drawn comparisons due to the historical context and the pressure of delivering from the outset.
His early-season form and consistency throughout the campaign have been pivotal to Dortmund’s resurgence after a shaky start to the year.
The result against Kiel not only capped a strong individual season for Guirassy but also confirmed Dortmund’s fourth-place finish in the league — securing the final German spot in next season’s Champions League.
The club, often referred to by their nickname “the Marsupials,” rallied in the latter half of the season to overtake rivals in the table, and Guirassy’s contributions have been central to that charge.
In total, Guirassy has found the net 34 times across all competitions and contributed nine assists, highlighting his all-around importance to Edin Terzić’s side.
His 21 Bundesliga goals earned him the runner-up spot in the league’s Golden Boot race, finishing only behind Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, who netted 26 times in his first Bundesliga season.
Guirassy’s breakthrough campaign also adds to his growing reputation on the international stage. With 24 caps and nine goals for Guinea, his performances at club level have mirrored his rising stature in African football.
The striker is now poised to carry that form into the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13.
That tournament offers Guirassy a further chance to enhance his already outstanding statistics and cement his status as one of European football’s most prolific forwards of the season.
For Borussia Dortmund, the emergence of Guirassy has been a defining narrative of their 2024-25 campaign. And for the player himself, it has been a season that not only broke records but also signalled his arrival on the biggest stage.
Serhou Guirassy is the first ever Borussia Dortmund player to score more than 20 Bundesliga goals in their first season at the club.
