Guinean Football Federation denies initiating legal action over 1976 AFCON title
The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has categorically denied attempt to challenge the result of the 1976 Africa Cup of Nation clash against Morocco.
Reports went rife that the Guinean FA intends to initiate legal proceedings with either the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) or the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the match against the Atlas Lions at the continental showpiece.
But the domestic football governing body (Guinean FA) has swiftly downplayed such reports, stressing the information is inaccurate and has no official basis.
The match in questing was held on March 14, 1976 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the direction of the Zambian referee Nyirenda Chayu, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.
Guinea opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Chérif Souleymane, before Morocco equalized in the 86th minute through Ahmed Makrouh, known as “Baba”.
Per the Guinean FA, the competition did not include a classic final considering the regulations in force at the time.
After an initial group stage, the qualified teams competed in a final group stage in the form of a mini-league, the ranking of which directly determined the winner.
In this context, Morocco finished top of this final group and was regularly crowned African champion, with Guinea occupying second place.
The football governing body in Guinea has, therefore, reaffirms their commitment to respecting historical facts and sporting regulations, while entreating the public the threat the information with the needed contempt it deserves
