Guinea international Saïdou Sow returns to Nantes on loan from Strasbourg

Guinea international defender Saïdou Sow has returned to Nantes on loan from Strasbourg as the eight-time French champions prepare for life in Ligue 2.

The 24-year-old centre-back has joined Les Canaris for the season with an option for Nantes to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan.

The deal marks Sow’s return to Nantes after he spent the second half of the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season with the club on loan.

Sow brings Ligue 2 experience

Sow joined Strasbourg from Saint-Etienne three years ago but has struggled for regular playing time, making only 25 appearances for the Alsatian club.

The Guinea international spent last season on loan at Ligue 2 side Clermont, gaining valuable experience in the French second tier.

That familiarity with the division could prove important for Nantes as they attempt to secure an immediate return to Ligue 1 after finishing second from bottom last season.

Nantes strengthen defence

Nantes identified an experienced central defender as a priority after parting ways with Nigeria international Chidozie Awaziem.

Sow’s return provides the club with additional experience at the back as they prepare for a demanding promotion campaign.

His previous spell at Nantes also means he already knows the club and its environment, potentially making his transition back into the squad smoother.

Nantes begin their Ligue 2 campaign at home against Red Star FC on Saturday, with the club determined to make an immediate push for promotion.
