Guinea-Bissau will continue their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with two crucial fixtures in March, facing Sierra Leone in Liberia before hosting Burkina Faso in Bissau.
Currently second in Group A, the team led by coach Boa Morte aims to secure vital points to remain in contention for a historic World Cup qualification.
Neutral venue for Sierra Leone clash
Guinea-Bissau’s first challenge will be against Sierra Leone on March 20, but the match will take place at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia rather than Sierra Leone’s home ground.
The venue shift is due to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) deeming Sierra Leone’s national stadium unfit to host international fixtures.
CAF has appointed a Ghanaian officiating team for the encounter, which is set to kick off at 16:00 GMT.
Given the close competition in Group A, this fixture holds significant weight for both teams as they battle for qualification.
Burkina Faso visit Bissau for key encounter
Following their trip to Liberia, Guinea-Bissau will host Burkina Faso on March 24 at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau.
The match, which will also kick off at 16:00 GMT, will be officiated by a Rwandan refereeing team.
This game could be decisive for Guinea-Bissau’s qualification hopes, as a win would strengthen their position in the group standings.
Burkina Faso, currently one point behind Guinea-Bissau, will also view this as a must-win encounter.
Guinea-Bissau’s path to qualification
With six points from their first four matches, Guinea-Bissau sits in second place, trailing Egypt by four points.
However, the race remains tight, with Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone both within striking distance.
The top spot in the group guarantees direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, while second place could still offer a route through playoffs.
Current Group A standings
- Egypt – 10 points (+9)
- Guinea-Bissau – 6 points (+1)
- Burkina Faso – 5 points (+2)
- Sierra Leone – 5 points (-1)
- Ethiopia – 3 points (-3)
- Djibouti – 1 point (-8)
With the qualification battle heating up, Guinea-Bissau will need a strong showing in these two matches to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
