Guinea-Bissau: Sport Bissau e Benfica Crowned Champions

Sport Bissau e Benfica Crowned Guinea-Bissau Champions, Two Players Earn National Call-Ups
By BBC News Sport Africa

Sport Bissau e Benfica have clinched the Guinea-Bissau national football championship in emphatic style, securing a 4-0 victory over Bula FC on the final day of the season. The win sealed their triumph at the end of the 26-match campaign, finishing with 58 points—just two ahead of closest rivals Sporting, who ended the season on 56 points.

Bambadinca rounded out the top three with 44 points, falling well short in the title race but securing a commendable finish in a competitive league season.

This marks a significant achievement for Sport Bissau e Benfica, whose consistent performances throughout the season were rewarded with silverware and national recognition. Their championship-winning campaign has also had international implications, with two of the club’s standout performers earning call-ups to the national team.

Midfielder Bura and forward Sumaila Djassi have been named in Guinea-Bissau’s squad for the second round of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The national team is set to face Congo in a crucial group-stage encounter as part of the road to the tournament in Gabon.

The inclusion of Bura and Djassi highlights the growing strength of domestic talent in Guinea-Bissau, as well as the increasing confidence the national selectors have in home-based players. Both players played pivotal roles in Sport Bissau e Benfica’s campaign and will now have the opportunity to showcase their abilities on the continental stage.

Guinea-Bissau’s fixture against Congo represents a key moment in their qualification campaign, and the presence of in-form players from the national league could provide a timely boost.

Sport Bissau e Benfica’s title triumph adds another chapter to the club’s storied history and sets a strong foundation for continued success both domestically and in contributing to the national team’s ambitions.
