Lyon Midfielder Gueïda Fofana Faces Six-Month Layoff Following Ankle Surgery
Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Gueïda Fofana is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing ankle surgery this week, club president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed.
The 23-year-old was operated on in Porto by renowned Dutch surgeon Professor Niek van Dijk, following persistent ankle issues that have troubled him for several months. The operation marks the second time the Franco-Malian midfielder has gone under the knife for the same problem, having had a previous procedure in April.
“This is a tough blow for Gueïda and for the club,” said Aulas during a press conference on Friday. “He is a key player, and his absence will be felt.”
Fofana, once tipped as one of France’s brightest midfield talents, missed the end of last season due to ongoing discomfort in his ankle joint. Despite efforts to manage the injury through rehabilitation, the pain persisted, ultimately forcing the need for another surgical intervention.
Head coach Hubert Fournier, who had been counting on Fofana for the upcoming campaign, admitted the club may now be forced to explore the transfer market to compensate for his absence.
“We are thinking about an opportunity,” said Fournier. “But we won’t rush. In the meantime, we have full confidence in Corentin Tolisso, who will step up in Gueïda’s position.”
Tolisso, who impressed last season with his versatility and composure, is expected to feature more prominently in Lyon’s midfield while Fofana recovers.
Fofana’s injury is a significant setback, both for the player and the club. Having captained France at youth levels and shown early promise since arriving at Lyon from Le Havre, his development has been hampered by recurrent injuries. At just 23, another six months on the sidelines could raise questions about his long-term fitness and future at the top level.
Lyon, who are preparing for a challenging domestic season as well as potential European competition, will hope that Fofana’s recovery goes smoothly. The club is also expected to monitor the transfer market closely in the coming weeks, particularly as they face a congested fixture list and the need for squad depth.
Fofana’s return is not expected until early next year, and both the player and the club are hoping this latest surgery will finally resolve the persistent ankle problem that has dogged his progress.
