Guédiawaye sanctioned after crowd violence rocks Ligue 1 clash with Pikine
The Senegalese Professional Football League has come down hard on Guédiawaye FC following violent incidents that marred their Ligue 1 encounter with AS Pikine on March 29.
The match, part of matchday 21 of the Senegalese Ligue 1, was overshadowed by acts of vandalism that erupted outside the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium. The disturbances prompted swift condemnation from league authorities, who vowed to take decisive action.
Following a disciplinary review, the league has now imposed two major sanctions on Guédiawaye. Firstly, the club’s supporters have been banned from attending the team’s next three away fixtures—a move aimed at curbing further incidents and restoring order.
In addition, Guédiawaye will be forced to play their next three home league matches at a neutral venue, stripping them of home advantage and the backing of their local fan base during a crucial phase of the season.
The sanctions highlight the league’s firm stance against fan violence and its determination to maintain safety and discipline within Senegalese football. Officials had earlier condemned the unrest in strong terms, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in the sport.
For Guédiawaye FC, the penalties represent a significant setback, both competitively and financially. Playing away from home and without traveling supporters could have a direct impact on their performance and standing in the league.
Meanwhile, the decision sends a clear message to clubs and supporters alike: misconduct off the pitch will carry serious consequences. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how Guédiawaye respond—both in terms of results and in restoring discipline among their fan base.
