Guardiola says Jeremy Doku’s path to world class hinges on mentality
Pep Guardiola has challenged Jeremy Doku to elevate his mindset if he is to reach the elite level occupied by players such as Vinícius Júnior and Lamine Yamal.
The Manchester City manager made the remarks after Doku delivered a standout display in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Brentford, scoring a superb goal to underline his growing influence in the closing weeks of the campaign.
Guardiola did not hesitate when asked whether the Belgian winger possesses the potential to reach the very top tier.
“Yeah, for sure,” he said, pointing to the importance of embracing constant pressure and internal competition.
The City boss noted that while Doku has long demonstrated exceptional ability, his recent performances have begun to translate more directly into match-winning contributions.
However, Guardiola stressed that the decisive step lies beyond technical skill or physical attributes.
“It depends on your mentality,” he explained, urging the 23-year-old to adopt an unrelenting desire to be among the very best.
“It depends on your mentality. I want to become one of the best wingers in the world. Otherwise, you’re in a comfort zone and you say, ‘No, it’s fine, it’s fine.’
“Always I’ve been, Jeremy, dribbles and whatever. I always try. But I say, no, I want to become one of the best of the best. That is when you reach that level.”
City’s victory keeps them firmly in pursuit of the title, though Arsenal maintain a five-point advantage after edging West Ham United.
