Two brothels in Greece, “Villa Erotica” and “Soula’s House of History,” have become sponsors of a football team called Voukefalas. The team, based in Larissa, Greece, now bears the name of the two brothels. This unusual sponsorship arrangement has been attributed to the financial crisis affecting Greek football. The president of the club, Yiannis Batziolas, mentioned that amateur football has been abandoned by many, and the sponsorship is seen as a survival strategy. Players are promised special bonuses at the brothels owned by Soula Aleyridou, one of the sponsors. However, authorities in Larissa have prohibited players from wearing pink jerseys during matches, considering it contrary to the “sporting ideal” and inappropriate for fans and amateur football. The Voukefalas club states that it needs €10,000 per year to cover its costs.
