Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has cautioned William Saliba against the temptation of a move to Real Madrid, urging the young defender to remain at the Emirates Stadium.
Saliba, who has Cameroonian descent, has been a standout performer for Arsenal, contributing significantly to their defensive solidity.
Petit acknowledged the allure of joining a club with Real Madrid’s stature but emphasized the importance of considering the broader picture.
He noted that while playing for such a prestigious club might seem appealing, the situation may not be as advantageous as it appears.
“It will be the same with Saliba. I can understand that it could be a dream for a player to sign for the best club in the world. But the grass is not really greener outside,” Petit told Standard Sport.
“There’s been a lot of speculation in the last few months about Arsenal spending a lot of money, the next transfer market, signing strikers, wingers and I totally agree with that.
“But I’ve said many times recently, they have to be very aware of keeping their best players through the spine of the team if they want to improve, if they want to reach the next step. What does it mean if you bring top strikers in and then you lose your top defenders?”
The 24-year-old French international has been instrumental in Arsenal’s defensive lineup, forming a formidable partnership with Gabriel Magalhães.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from top European clubs, including Real Madrid.
However, Petit believes that Saliba’s development would benefit from continued growth at Arsenal, where he is assured of regular playing time and a pivotal role in the team’s ambitions.
Arsenal is reportedly keen to secure Saliba’s long-term future at the club, with discussions underway to extend his contract.
