Granit Xhaka faces Swiss investigation over alleged fake Covid-19 certificates

Swiss authorities have opened an investigation into an allegation that Sunderland midfielder and Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka obtained forged Covid-19 certificates.

The 33-year-old could face a prison sentence of up to five years if he is convicted. However, Xhaka remains innocent unless and until his guilt is established.

According to French website Foot Mercato, the Office of the Public Prosecutor in Lucerne is handling the case. Xhaka is expected to be questioned by Swiss authorities in early October, when investigators will seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged certificates.

The investigation comes as Xhaka remains one of Switzerland’s leading players and one of the most recognisable Swiss footballers in Europe. He has also built a long career in the Premier League and is now playing for Sunderland.

No further legal steps have been announced at this stage. The planned questioning is expected to precede a decision on how the investigation will proceed.

Xhaka was asked about the case after one of his recent matches but declined to discuss it.

“I have no comment on this,” he said. “I played football today, and that is what matters to me now. Nothing at all. I have been through worse.”

The Swiss authorities’ investigation remains ongoing, with Xhaka’s appearance for questioning in October now the next significant stage in the case.
