Granada confirms serious injury to Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane after Almería Clash
Granada CF has confirmed that goalkeeper Luca Zidane suffered a serious injury during their Segunda División encounter with UD Almería.
The incident occurred late in the match following a heavy collision, leaving the 27-year-old with a fractured jaw and chin.
Medical Findings Reveal Full Extent
In a statement reported by Asharq Al-Awsat, the club explained that initial concerns of a concussion were later compounded by scans confirming fractures to both the jaw and chin. These findings have raised concerns over the severity of the injury and the potential recovery timeline.
Treatment Decision Pending
Granada indicated that Zidane will decide on the next steps in his treatment in consultation with the club’s medical staff. Early indications suggest surgery could be required, depending on how his condition evolves in the coming hours.
Injury Moment Stuns Stadium
The incident took place in the 87th minute when Zidane collided with Brazilian forward Talles Henrique. The match was halted for several minutes as medical teams attended to the goalkeeper, who showed signs of dizziness and was bleeding from the mouth.
He eventually left the pitch at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes to applause from supporters and was replaced by Ander Astralaga.
Immediate Hospitalisation and Monitoring
Following the incident, Zidane was taken straight to hospital for further examinations in line with medical protocols. Head coach Pacheta confirmed that the goalkeeper was experiencing dizziness and would remain under close observation until his condition stabilises.
Blow for Algeria Ahead of World Cup
The timing of the injury presents a major concern for Algeria national football team, with the FIFA World Cup 2026 fast approaching in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Zidane has been a key figure between the posts, and his potential absence could disrupt the team’s defensive setup.
Goalkeeping Crisis Deepens
The situation is further complicated by the absence of other options. Goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea has already withdrawn due to a shoulder injury, while Melvin Mastel recently underwent surgery for a groin hernia. These setbacks leave the coaching staff facing a difficult challenge as they prepare for the global tournament.
With Zidane’s condition now confirmed to be more serious than initially feared, both Granada and Algeria await further updates that will determine the length of his recovery and his availability for the crucial weeks ahead.
