Gouna hold Canal to draw despite late red card in Egyptian Premier League

Gouna drew 1-1 with Canal in the second round of the Egyptian Premier League, overcoming a numerical disadvantage to claim a point at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia.

Canal took the lead in the sixth minute through Maoly Wayo, but Gouna levelled shortly before half-time when Ahmed Gamal headed home. Gouna were later reduced to 10 men when Wilfred Teko was sent off in the 89th minute after collecting a second yellow card.

The result gives Gouna two points from their opening two matches and leaves them 10th in the table. Canal moved on to four points and sit seventh after drawing for the first time this season.

Canal made the stronger start and opened the scoring inside six minutes. Mahmoud Shalata supplied the pass into the Gouna penalty area, where Wayo met it and struck the ball into the net.

The home side appeared to have been handed another advantage shortly before the interval when Gouna defender Omar Magdy Elgazar was shown a straight red card in the 43rd minute. The referee had judged that Elgazar had struck Canal goalscorer Wayo in the face.

However, after reviewing the incident on the video assistant referee system, the official overturned the dismissal and replaced it with a yellow card, allowing Gouna to continue with 11 players.

Gouna took advantage almost immediately and found an equaliser just moments before the break. Khaled Seddiq delivered a well-placed cross into the box, and Ahmed Gamal rose to meet it with a header that went into the left side of the goal.

The second half produced no further goals, although Gouna finished the match with another player sent off. Teko was shown a second yellow card in the 89th minute following a strong challenge on a Canal player in Gouna’s half.

Despite playing the closing stages with 10 men, Gouna held on to secure their second consecutive draw in the league. For Canal, the match represented their first draw of the campaign after they won their opening fixture.

Gouna will return to action on Wednesday, when they face El Mokawloon El Arab in the third round of the Egyptian Premier League.

Canal will play Wadi Degla on Tuesday in the same round.
