Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor fumes over costly errors as club suffer early CAF Champions League elimination

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has expressed his disappointment with his team’s costly individual errors following their heavy 5-1 defeat to Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League.

The Kenyan giants were completely outplayed in the second leg, suffering another damaging defeat that saw them bow out of the competition with a humiliating 7-1 aggregate scoreline.

Akonnor was particularly frustrated by the nature of the goals conceded, with individual mistakes proving costly as Gor Mahia struggled to cope with the quality and intensity of their Egyptian opponents.

After the match, the former Black Stars tactician expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the side.

“Today, I am really upset. It was so disappointing to see these errors from the team. This was so disappointing to see from a team that we have encouraged to try and do well,” Akonnor said.

Gor Mahia had travelled into the second leg needing a strong performance after falling behind in the tie, but their hopes of progressing were effectively ended by another error-ridden display.

Pyramids FC capitalised on Gor Mahia’s defensive lapses to take control of the contest and eventually complete a comprehensive victory, leaving the Kenyan side with no chance of overturning the deficit.

For Akonnor, the manner of the defeat will be particularly concerning as his team failed to show the discipline and concentration required at continental level.

The former Ghana coach will now have to turn his attention to rebuilding confidence within the squad and correcting the mistakes that contributed to their early Champions League exit.
