Goncalo Ramos makes most of Portugal opportunity after Cristiano Ronaldo departure

Goncalo Ramos has emerged as one of the standout players of the current international break after taking his chance under Portugal manager Jorge Jesus.

The AC Milan striker had initially been Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-choice deputy. However, after Ronaldo left the Portugal camp, Ramos was handed a starting role for the “Brazil of Europe” and has responded with three goals and an assist in three successive appearances.

Ramos began the break on the bench for Portugal’s opening match against Wales, which they won 1-0. He replaced Ronaldo for the final 23 minutes of that game.

Following Ronaldo’s departure, Ramos started Portugal’s next three matches. Two came against Norway, with the other against Denmark, and he proved decisive in each run-out.

The 24-year-old has impressed with his movement and finishing inside the penalty area, making the most of the opportunities that have come his way. He has also worked hard to lead Portugal’s pressing against opponents, repaying the faith shown in him by Jorge Jesus.

Ramos’ form has provided a significant return from the gamble of giving him a regular starting place in Ronaldo’s absence. His performances have helped Portugal maintain a perfect record across four consecutive matches.

Portugal beat Norway 2-1 in both of their meetings, overcame Denmark 4-2 and defeated Wales 1-0.
