Golden Arrows became the first team through to the Carling Knockout quarter-finals after a dominant 4-0 win over Chippa United at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The result marked an ideal start to Mandla Ncikazi’s third spell in charge of the Durban-based club, although the newly appointed head coach watched the match from the stands. Ashley Makhanya took charge from the bench.
Arrows began with purpose and took the lead after 11 minutes. Junior Dion rose above the Chippa United defence to meet a corner and directed his header into the net.
The hosts continued to control the game and doubled their advantage 11 minutes later. Dion was involved again, this time turning provider on the counter-attack as he played in Sabelo Sithole. Sithole kept his composure to finish clinically and put Golden Arrows 2-0 ahead.
Chippa United struggled to produce a sustained response. Sirgio Kammies tried his luck from distance but sent his effort wide, while Azola Matrose’s deliveries from the left failed to create a clear opening.
Golden Arrows remained the more threatening side before half-time and had opportunities to extend their lead, but their decision-making in the final third prevented them from adding to the scoreline.
The pattern continued after the break, with Arrows maintaining their attacking approach and Chippa United finding it difficult to create clear-cut chances.
Kammies had another opportunity in the 57th minute but could not take advantage, shooting wide from close range.
Chippa United’s attempts to break through the Arrows defence were repeatedly frustrated by the hosts’ organisation. Justice Figareido looked capable of offering a route back into the contest in the 78th minute when he powered forward towards goal, but Dumisani Msibi made the save to deny him.
Golden Arrows then put the outcome beyond doubt in the closing stages. Substitute Nhlanhla Zwane scored to strengthen the hosts’ advantage before fellow substitute Jerome Karelse completed the scoring.
The 4-0 victory confirmed Golden Arrows’ place in the quarter-finals and made them the first side to progress to the last eight of the competition.
For Ncikazi, the emphatic result offered an encouraging beginning to his return to Abafana Bes’thende, despite the coach having to watch his side’s performance from the stands.
