Ghana Olympic Committee President Ben Nunoo Mensah has highlighted Kwesi Appiah’s contributions to Ghanaian football, describing him as one of the nation’s finest coaches. Speaking on Asempa FM, Mensah expressed regret over Appiah’s dismissal as Black Stars coach in 2019, emphasizing the team’s struggles since his departure.
“Kwesi Appiah has been one of Ghana’s best coaches over the years, and it was unfortunate how he was dismissed.
When an opportunity came to appoint him again, he was overlooked,” Mensah said.
Appiah, currently coaching Sudan, recently led the team to the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, surpassing Ghana.
Mensah underlined the need to nurture local coaching talent, citing Ghana’s past AFCON triumphs under homegrown leadership.
“Most of the AFCON titles we won were under local coaches. They will always be more committed to the nation,” he added.
Mensah’s remarks come amid calls to prioritize local expertise in shaping the future of Ghana’s national team.
