Tensions have escalated at Zamalek as the club moves to formally investigate goalkeeper Mohamed Awwad’s recent dispute, which began after he was dropped from the Confederation Cup group-stage clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
A source inside the club told Kooora, the board has decided to refer Awwad to an official inquiry to fully understand the dimensions of the crisis, with any punishment depending on the assessment of football director Abdel Nasser Mohamed and head coach Ahmed Abdelraouf.
The source stressed that if the investigation proves Awwad did not commit any wrongdoing, the financial fine imposed on him will be lifted immediately and his status in the squad restored. He firmly denied any personal rift between Awwad and Abdelraouf, clarifying that the root of the problem lies in the keeper’s objection to a previous fine handed down by Abdel Nasser Mohamed.
Because of this, Awwad himself requested to be referred to a formal hearing to clarify the reasons and regulations behind that earlier sanction, a step the board approved.
The goalkeeper is expected to face the disciplinary panel in the coming days in a bid to end the controversy and determine whether the fine will stand or be cancelled.
This comes at a delicate time for Zamalek, who are keen to preserve unity in the squad, especially in the goalkeeping department, to avoid further instability that could harm their upcoming campaigns.
