Gnabry ends 19-week Bayern absence as Musiala takes cautious step towards return

Serge Gnabry has returned to full team training with Bayern Munich after an absence of about four months, while Jamal Musiala has also taken part in a complete session as he continues his carefully managed recovery.

Gnabry had been sidelined for roughly 19 weeks with an injury to the adductor muscle in his right thigh. The Germany winger suffered the problem during Bayern’s final training session before their Bundesliga match against VfB Stuttgart on 18 April and completed almost all of his rehabilitation work at the club’s training base.

The 31-year-old missed Bayern’s opening Bundesliga fixture of the 2026-27 season against VfB Stuttgart on Friday, when Vincent Kompany’s side began their campaign with a 5-1 victory. However, he completed Monday’s training session with the rest of the squad, according to German newspaper Bild.

Gnabry appeared to be in good spirits and showed no obvious signs of discomfort. He was involved in challenges with team-mates, moved energetically and took part in shooting exercises.

Despite the encouraging development, he is not expected to feature in Bayern’s next match, when they travel to face Osnabruck in the German Cup on Wednesday evening.

Musiala also completed the session, although Bayern are continuing to take a cautious approach to his return. Bild reported that the 23-year-old’s medication had been increased after he suffered two collapses during friendly matches connected to absences caused by neurological disturbances, described as brief losses of consciousness.

The Germany international looked physically sharp during Monday’s training and took part in challenges without restriction. The session was held partly on a pitch covered by a protective screen and partly on an adjoining pitch without one.

“Musiala also took part fully in the team training on Monday afternoon. The Germany star looked physically fit and on the right path towards a comeback. He entered challenges fully and completed the entire training session,” Bild reported.

However, the newspaper stressed that Bayern do not want to rush the midfielder back into competitive action.

“The same applies to Jamal Musiala, 23, whose medication was increased after two collapses in two friendly matches due to absences caused by neurological disturbances,” Bild said. “Despite this, Musiala’s condition is being handled carefully. The coaching staff believe he should not be rushed back now.”

The return of Gnabry and Musiala has nevertheless given Kompany a significant boost. Bild described it as good news for the Bayern manager because every player is now involved in team training, with nobody injured or working individually.

Arijon Ibrahimovic was absent from the session as he moves closer to a loan transfer to Augsburg. The proposed deal includes an option for the club to buy him for eight million euros.

Right-back Sacha Boey also missed training. His future under Kompany remains uncertain, and sporting director Max Eberl is working to secure his departure before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

There was a brief stoppage during the session when Dayot Upamecano brought down new team-mate Luis Diaz during a training exercise. The Colombia winger fell heavily, but both players were able to continue after receiving short treatment.

Bild also noted one other detail from Monday’s workout: Moroccan player Ismael Saibari trained with a bandage around his left wrist.
