Giuliano Simeone rejects Mourinho refereeing debate after Atletico Madrid derby win

Giuliano Simeone says Atletico Madrid’s victory over Real Madrid in the capital derby is an important boost, but insists his attention remains on improving his own performances and helping his team-mates rather than becoming involved in off-field controversy.

“I always focus on myself and give everything I can for Atletico,” Simeone said after the match. “I dedicate 24 hours a day to being in the best physical condition possible to help the team, and I am always trying to improve, both technically and in the areas where I need to develop.”

The forward also spoke about his long-standing connection with Atletico Madrid and the importance of the derby in his life.

“Since I was little, I watched Atletico play many matches, especially the derbies,” he said. “These games are part of my way of life, and I always try to give all my energy against any opponent.”

Simeone was asked about comments made by Jose Mourinho regarding refereeing, but refused to enter into a dispute with the Real Madrid manager.

“I have a great deal of respect for referees,” he said. “They are human beings, and sometimes they get things right and sometimes they make mistakes. If they made that decision, it is because they saw the incident that way.”

The victory gave Atletico three important points, but Simeone stressed that the team must continue working and developing.

“The manager always focuses on each match separately,” he said. “These are three important points, but we have to improve as a group. We are happy with the win, but we must continue to develop.”

Simeone, the son of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, said he viewed criticism as an opportunity to make further progress.

“I also try to put myself in other people’s position as long as the criticism is constructive,” he said. “I know I have a lot to improve technically, in my movement, with my left foot and with my shots from outside the area, so I can help the team when it needs me and give 110% of my energy.”

He finished by making clear that Atletico Madrid’s players did not want to become distracted by refereeing decisions or other matters away from the pitch.

“We always focus on ourselves and do not waste our energy on anything from outside,” Simeone said. “That is your news, while we are working on improving as a group.”
