Giuliano Simeone answers Aboutrika criticism with man-of-the-match display in Madrid derby

Giuliano Simeone responded to strong criticism from former Al Ahly and Egypt forward Mohamed Aboutrika by playing a decisive role in Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Madrid derby.

Aboutrika had called for the Atletico forward to be substituted at half-time after a goalless opening 45 minutes, but Simeone went on to win a penalty and create the second goal as Atletico moved up to third in La Liga with 16 points.

The derby’s first half was closely contested, with strong physical challenges and several disputed refereeing decisions. Neither side created a clear chance, and the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.

Speaking during beIN SPORTS’ coverage, Aboutrika criticised the starting line-ups selected by Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and Atletico boss Diego Simeone.

“Mourinho and Simeone are making compromises with their line-ups. In the second half, the team that abandons those compromises will win,” he said.

Aboutrika then singled out Giuliano Simeone, the Atletico manager’s son, for particular criticism.

“Simeone must take his son off immediately. Giuliano is offering nothing, and if Atletico want to win, they have to replace him,” Aboutrika added.

The second half unfolded very differently. Giuliano Simeone became one of the most influential players on the pitch and helped Atletico establish control over the match at the Metropolitano.

The Argentine won a penalty, which Grimaldo converted to put Atletico ahead. Real Madrid were reduced to 10 men as they fell behind, according to the match updates.

Giuliano Simeone continued to cause problems and then supplied the pass for Jonathan David to score Atletico’s second goal. Jonathan David’s strike extended the home side’s advantage and completed a major turnaround from the player’s subdued first-half performance.

Atletico went on to secure a 2-1 win, with their improved display after the interval proving decisive. Giuliano Simeone was named player of the match after directly influencing both of his side’s goals.

The result strengthens Atletico Madrid’s position in the La Liga title race. They now sit third on 16 points, while Real Madrid suffered another setback under Mourinho.

Real Madrid are six points behind leaders Barcelona, who have 21 points at the top of the table. The defeat left Mourinho’s side facing a wider gap to the summit after a match that had appeared finely balanced at half-time.

For Giuliano Simeone, however, the derby ended with a very different assessment from the one Aboutrika had offered during the interval. His penalty-winning contribution, assist for Jonathan David and man-of-the-match award made him a central figure in Atletico’s victory.
