Guy Roux, the former coach of AJ Auxerre, did not hold back in his assessment of Alain Giresse, the coach of the Senegal national team. In an interview with the sports daily Stades, Roux expressed his belief that Giresse, despite his illustrious career as a footballer, still has much to prove as a coach.
“I believe he was a fantastic footballer, but as a coach, he has yet to demonstrate the same level of effectiveness. While he achieved some success in Gabon, I think he still needs to show his coaching abilities,” Roux stated candidly.
Giresse has faced criticism recently, especially following Senegal’s 1-1 draw against Mali in a friendly match. Since January 2013, he has managed nine matches for the Lions of Teranga, resulting in six draws. Additionally, Senegal failed to qualify for both the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 FIFA World Cup under his leadership. Despite this, Giresse continues to enjoy the support of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).
