Giovanni Sio Set to Join Rennes Amid Transfer Twist
Ivorian forward Giovanni Sio is set to sign for Stade Rennais, in a surprise move that sees the club beat several Ligue 1 rivals to his signature.
According to L’Équipe, the 26-year-old was initially expected to join Lille, but financial complications at the northern club opened the door for Rennes to swoop in and secure a deal. The sudden turnaround marks a significant boost for Rennes, who continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
Sio, who spent last season on loan at SC Bastia, had also been linked with moves to Saint-Étienne and Montpellier. Saint-Étienne had reportedly identified him as a potential replacement for Max-Alain Gradel, who looks likely to leave the club this summer. Despite his desire to stay at Bastia, where he made a strong impression with his goal-scoring form, a permanent deal did not materialize.
Montpellier were one of the first clubs to express concrete interest in Sio, who remains under contract with Swiss side FC Basel. But it is Rennes who have now moved into pole position, taking advantage of the shifting dynamics in the French transfer market.
The Ivorian international’s versatility and eye for goal are expected to add depth and dynamism to Rennes’ attacking options. His ability to play both as a central striker and on the wing makes him a valuable asset, particularly for a club aiming to challenge in the top half of the Ligue 1 table.
The move will also mark a return to Brittany for Sio, who previously had a brief spell with Nantes early in his career. If the deal goes through as expected, he will join a Rennes side looking to build consistency after an up-and-down campaign last season.
An official announcement is expected in the coming days as final details are sorted. For Rennes, securing Sio’s services is seen as a smart and opportunistic signing—especially given the competition from other Ligue 1 clubs.
