Gideon Mensah returns early to FC Koln

Gideon Mensah will return to FC Koln earlier than planned after Ghana’s scheduled friendly against Morocco was cancelled.

The 28-year-old left-back had joined the Black Stars during the international break, but the abandoned fixture has brought his national-team involvement to an unexpected end.

Reports cited by Geissblog indicate that disagreements over unpaid bonuses contributed to the cancellation. Some Ghana players were reportedly unwilling to travel to Morocco because of the dispute. The Ghana Football Association had also parted company with coach Carlos Queiroz following two defeats in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

For Koln, the disruption provides one practical advantage. Mensah is expected back in the city on Saturday, giving him several extra days to train with his club before the Bundesliga resumes. He should be able to join preparations at the start of next week for the derby against Borussia Monchengladbach on October 11.

The summer signing has already made four appearances this season and remains an important option at left-back. His early return will allow the coaching staff to assess his condition, restore his rhythm and work on the defensive plan for the highly anticipated fixture.

Mensah’s unexpected availability could prove useful as Koln prepare for a demanding local derby.
