Gianni Infantino, Shehu Dikko, Amaju Pinnick discuss future of Nigerian football amid NFF shake-up

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has met with Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko in Zurich, Switzerland, just days after Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and members of his executive board resigned from their positions.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, comes at a critical moment for Nigerian football, with the country embarking on a major reform process following the mass resignation of the NFF leadership.

Gusau announced his resignation on August 27, alongside NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and several members of the federation’s executive committee.

The departures followed growing criticism of the administration after Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ historic failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Against that backdrop, Dikko led a delegation from the NSC and other Nigerian football stakeholders to FIFA headquarters, where they discussed the way forward for the country’s football administration.

Infantino said the discussions covered institutional, governance and developmental issues, as well as ongoing collaboration between FIFA and Nigeria.

The FIFA president also stressed the importance of creating stronger structures and clearer pathways to provide more opportunities for young Nigerian footballers.

“We explored areas where FIFA can further support the growth of our beautiful game in this football-passionate country,” Infantino said.

The timing of the meeting is significant as Nigeria seeks to reform its football administration while maintaining compliance with FIFA’s principles on the autonomy and governance of member associations.

Infantino also wished Nigeria’s Falconets success at the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and the country’s U-17 women’s team ahead of their respective global tournaments.

The discussions with Dikko could therefore prove important as Nigeria attempts to chart a new course for its football administration following one of the most significant leadership upheavals in the NFF’s recent history.
