Gianni Infantino faces FIFA storm as European lawmakers demand probe over Folarin Balogun red-card row
FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing growing pressure from European lawmakers after allegations that political influence played a role in the decision to clear United States striker Folarin Balogun to feature at the World Cup despite a previous red card.
A group of European Parliament members is gathering support for an investigation into Infantino’s involvement in the controversial decision, claiming football’s governing body compromised its principles of fairness and political neutrality.
The controversy centres on Balogun’s dismissal during the United States’ victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 1. Under normal disciplinary procedures, the forward would have been suspended for the team’s following match.
However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee lifted the suspension on Monday, allowing the 25-year-old striker to return to action after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly contacted Infantino on behalf of the player.
The move has triggered criticism from lawmakers who believe the decision sets a dangerous precedent for the sport’s governance.
European lawmakers question FIFA’s independence
European Parliament members Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters and Niels Fuglsang have led calls for an investigation, describing FIFA’s handling of the matter as a serious threat to sporting integrity.
In a joint statement, the lawmakers criticised the decision to alter disciplinary rules during the tournament, arguing that it undermines the credibility of football’s regulations.
“The decision by soccer’s world governing body to ‘change the rule on red card suspensions mid-tournament is a disgrace and a perversion of justice,” they said.
They also accused Infantino and FIFA of yielding to political pressure, adding: “Once again, we’ve seen Infantino and FIFA surrender to the demands of the Trump administration.”
The lawmakers said 35 of their colleagues have already signed a letter supporting their request for action, with further backing expected as pressure builds.
Calls for FIFA Ethics Committee investigation
The group is urging football associations across European Union countries to push the FIFA Ethics Committee to examine whether political influence from the Trump administration contributed to the suspension being overturned.
They are also requesting scrutiny into what they describe as other possible breaches of FIFA’s political neutrality, including the decision to award Trump the FIFA Peace Prize.
The lawmakers argue that football’s authority depends on consistent application of rules and independence from external influence.
“The beauty of sport is that it is based on impartial and transparent rules. When Infantino allows political pressure to determine who gets to play, this sense of fairness goes out the window,” they said.
Their concerns extend beyond the Balogun case, with the lawmakers suggesting the incident reflects broader questions about FIFA’s relationship with political figures.
FIFA defends disciplinary process
FIFA has rejected suggestions that Infantino personally altered the disciplinary decision, maintaining that the suspension was lifted by the organisation’s independent disciplinary committee.
The governing body has insisted that the ruling followed its established procedures, but critics remain unconvinced and believe the timing of the decision raises questions about outside influence.
The dispute adds another controversy to Infantino’s tenure as FIFA president, with governance, transparency and political neutrality repeatedly attracting scrutiny during his leadership.
For European lawmakers, the issue is not only about one player’s availability but whether football’s rules can remain protected from political pressure.
As support for the proposed investigation grows, FIFA could face renewed calls to explain how and why Balogun’s suspension was overturned and whether the decision was influenced by forces beyond the football authorities.
