Ghana’s Tariq Lamptey vows to rediscover best form after sealing QPR move

Ghana international Tariq Lamptey says he is determined to get his career back on track after completing a move to EFL Championship side Queens Park Rangers during the ongoing summer transfer window.

The Black Stars defender has joined QPR as a free agent after ending his short-lived spell with Italian club Fiorentina, where injuries severely hampered his progress.

Lamptey’s time in Serie A proved frustrating, with the versatile full-back managing just 25 minutes of competitive football throughout the 2025/26 season due to persistent fitness problems. The difficult campaign brought an abrupt end to his stay in Italy, but the 25-year-old has wasted little time in finding a fresh challenge.

Queens Park Rangers have moved quickly to secure the services of the experienced defender as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Despite the setbacks of the past year, the Ghanaian remains confident that he can return to the level that made him one of England’s brightest young full-backs.

“I know what I’m capable of and I set myself high standards. I had a great start to my career, and I’ll keep continuing that,” Lamptey said.

Born in Hillingdon, Lamptey progressed through Chelsea’s renowned academy before making his Premier League debut against Arsenal in December 2019. His impressive displays earned him a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2020, where he established himself as one of the league’s most exciting attacking full-backs.

During his time with the Seagulls, Lamptey made more than 120 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his explosive pace, defensive work rate and ability to influence matches in the final third before making the switch to Fiorentina last summer.

Internationally, Lamptey switched allegiance from England to Ghana and represented the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He has since earned 11 senior caps for the four-time African champions and will be hoping regular football at QPR helps him reclaim a consistent place in the national team setup.

With a fresh start in familiar surroundings in England, Lamptey will be aiming to put his injury troubles behind him and rediscover the form that once made him one of the most highly-rated full-backs in European football.
