Former German international Gerald Asamoah has voiced skepticism about the chances of an African nation winning the FIFA World Cup in the near future.
Asamoah, who has Ghanaian roots and made his name with German Bundesliga side Schalke 04, reflected on Africa’s progress in global football but highlighted persistent challenges that, in his view, continue to hinder teams from the continent.
“I want to see this before I leave the earth, but it is not going to be easy,” he said, as reported by Joy Sports
“It is about teamwork, and this is a problem Africans have. We have always had some issues in the team,” he added.
Morocco came closest to achieving the historic feat in 2022, reaching the semi-finals before falling to Croatia in the third-place match.
Ghana and Senegal have also made notable runs in the past, both reaching the quarter-finals, but neither side managed to advance further.
Looking ahead, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Qualifiers are currently underway, and Ghana’s Black Stars are leading Group I with 15 points. They are set to face Chad and Mali in September as they continue their campaign for a place at the tournament.
