Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has taken a major step toward resuming his professional career after rejoining SC Freiburg’s first team training, nearly three years after his last competitive appearance.
The Ghana international trained fully with the squad on Wednesday, marking a significant breakthrough in a recovery journey that has tested both his patience and resilience.
Kyereh has been sidelined since February 4, 2023, when he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during Freiburg’s Bundesliga fixture against Borussia Dortmund.
The setback was particularly cruel for the attacking midfielder, who had previously endured a similar injury as a teenager while still carving out his path in the professional game.
A long and difficult recovery
What initially appeared to be a standard rehabilitation soon became more complicated. In 2024, Kyereh suffered a relapse after returning during Freiburg’s summer pre-season, forcing another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
That recurrence delayed his comeback once again and required a fresh rehabilitation programme, extending his absence well beyond initial projections.
Now, at 28, Kyereh is finally back in full first team training, a moment that signals renewed hope for both player and club. Freiburg have also included him in their Europa League squad, placing him in contention for Thursday’s fixture against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
A place in the matchday squad would represent his first competitive involvement since early 2023.
Freiburg and Ghana watching closely
Before injury halted his momentum, Kyereh was a key figure for Freiburg following his move from St. Pauli. He was valued for his intelligence between the lines, tireless work rate and ability to operate across multiple attacking roles.
His return offers Freiburg an additional creative option at a crucial stage of the season.
The timing is equally significant on the international stage. With the FIFA World Cup just five months away, Kyereh will be determined to rebuild fitness and form in order to re-enter Ghana’s plans.
He has already earned 18 caps for the Black Stars, featuring at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and representing Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
