Black Stars technical advisor Wilfried Schaffer has attributed the teams’ recent poor showing in qualifiers to unrest among players.
Before joining the West African giants, Ghana had already missed out on the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Morocco.
Since January, Schafer, an AFCON-winning coach, has been working closely with Ghana coach Otto Addo, a former Bundesliga player and current head of the national team.
His arrival appears to have spice up the Black Stars, restoring national pride with back-to-back wins in the World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar. Ghana defeated Chad 5-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Morocco to beat Madagascar 3-0 to boost qualification chances.
As quoted by AfricaSoccer.com, the former Cameroonian trainer insists the Black Stars recent qualification setbacks bounds down to unrest in the squad.
“The team had missed the Africa Cup—something considered a catastrophe in Ghana,” he said. “There was unrest in the squad, World Cup qualification wasn’t going well, and the president of the federation asked me to come in and bring some structure.” He said.
Ghana is set to participate in a four-nation tournament to be staged in the United Kingdom later this month. The Unity Cup featured Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars will return for the continuation of the World Cup qualifiers in September 2025.
