Ghanaian teenager Edgard Opoku has signed his first professional contract with Belgian side KAA Gent, securing his future with the club until 2028.

The 16-year-old, a standout performer in Gent’s U-16 squad, has been rewarded for his development with a long-term deal that underlines the club’s belief in his potential.

Known for his sharp technique, composure in possession, and creative instincts, Opoku has quickly built a reputation as one of the most promising young talents in the club’s academy system.

Gent confirmed the signing in an official statement, expressing both excitement and confidence about Opoku’s trajectory within their ranks.

The Belgian outfit, recognised for its investment in youth development, sees this move as a strategic step in nurturing talent from its own academy while reinforcing its long-standing focus on scouting and cultivating African prospects.

Born in Ghana and already drawing attention for his maturity beyond his years, Opoku has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the youth levels at Gent.

His ability to dictate play from midfield and create space with intelligent movement has drawn praise from coaching staff, who view him as a future asset for the senior squad.

By committing to a deal that runs until 2028, Gent have made clear their intent to build a pathway for Opoku’s transition to professional football.

The contract also reflects the club’s proactive stance in safeguarding its emerging talent against growing interest from outside Belgium.

This latest development also adds to KAA Gent’s reputation as a club that embraces African footballers and offers a platform for growth in Europe.

The Belgian Pro League has long been considered a springboard for young talent, and Gent, in particular, has played a key role in introducing African players to top-flight European football.

For Opoku, the professional contract is a reward for hard work and a sign of what lies ahead.

While he remains focused on his development at youth level, this agreement marks a significant milestone that could open the door to first-team opportunities in the near future.

Gent will continue to monitor his progress closely as he prepares for the next phase of his career.

With the structure and support now in place, the club hopes to nurture Opoku into a complete player ready to make an impact at senior level when the time comes.

Opoku’s signature is not just a personal triumph—it is a reflection of the growing role African talent continues to play in shaping the future of European football. And at just 16, the young Ghanaian’s journey is only beginning.
