Ghanaian midfielder Nana Kwame Abraham breaks silence after brutal attack in Nigerian league
Ghanaian midfielder Nana Kwame Abraham has broken his silence following a throat slit incident that marred the Nigerian Premier Football League clash between Katsina United and Barau FC.
Nana Kwame Abraham, who plies his trade for Barau FC was brutally attacked by unruly Katsina United fans shortly after the visitors equalizer in the highly-tensed clash on Saturday.
The chaotic scenes unfolded at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium when Barau FC levelled the score 1-1 through Orji Kalu in the 69th minute.
As reported earlier by Africasoccer.com, the Ghanaian midfielder was caught and had his throat slit in a horrifying act of violence that sent shockwaves across the football community.
The match was briefly stopped before continuing, with Abraham replaced by Hillary Ekawu following a deep cut on his neck.
Nana Kwame Abraham has, however, broken his silence after the unfortunate incident, stressing he is feeling better.
“Thank God I am feeling better now. Our medical team did an excellent job treating my injuries, and I’m grateful for their care.” he said as quoted by Dailysports.
Reflecting on the incident, Abraham expressed shock over the attack, emphasizing that football should remain a sport, not a battlefield:
“It’s really unfortunate what happened. Football is not a war — you can either win, draw, or lose. We’ve played five home games, won one, drawn three, and lost one without incident. So why should we be attacked here?”
The tragic event has reignited fierce debate about fan violence and poor security at league venues, with many calling for strict sanctions and immediate reform.
This latest act of brutality comes just weeks after violent scenes in Kano, further tarnishing the reputation of the NPFL and raising urgent questions about player safety in Nigerian football.
Meanwhile, Katsina United have been fined $6,267 and ordered to play all their remaining home matches behind closed doors at a neutral venue.
