Ghanaian goalkeeper Fredrick Asare set to leave Asante Kotoko after contract talks collapse

Ghanaian goalkeeper Fredrick Asare set to leave Asante Kotoko after contract talks collapse

Asante Kotoko and experienced goalkeeper Fredrick Asare appear set for a summer separation, with stalled contract negotiations signalling the end of his time at the Ghanaian club.

Asare’s current deal with the Kumasi-based giants is due to expire on 30 June, and discussions over a possible extension—initiated more than two months ago—have reportedly broken down due to disagreements over financial terms.

According to sources close to the player, no progress has been made, and Asare is expected to leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

The Ghana Premier League veteran, who has previously featured for Accra Lions and is currently valued at €150,000 on Transfermarkt, has endured a frustrating 2024–25 campaign.

He lost his starting role to Mohamed Camara early in the season, a development that has further strained his relationship with the club and its technical staff.

A member of Asare’s management team told Africafoot that the goalkeeper is deeply unhappy with his current situation at Kotoko. “Given the current situation, he will likely leave at the end of the season.

He hasn’t played much, and his relationship with the coach is far from satisfactory. Unfortunately, he hasn’t received any offers, which further complicates the situation. But we’re working on finding the ideal project for him, and our priority is Europe, as he’s an exceptional goalkeeper,” the source said.

Despite the club’s earlier attempts to downplay rumours of discontent, Asare’s playing time has remained limited. In January, Kwesi Appiah, Asante Kotoko’s head of sporting affairs, publicly denied reports that Asare was unsettled or had requested a move away.

However, little has changed since then, and the goalkeeper continues to find himself on the bench more often than not.

The 26-year-old has made just 15 appearances this season across the Ghana Premier League and the Ghana Cup. His performances have also come under scrutiny, with criticism mounting after a series of goals conceded in key league matches.

The negative spotlight, combined with reduced game time and failed contract talks, has created a situation that now appears irreparable.

Asare’s exit would mark the end of a stint that initially promised much. He was once seen as a reliable first-choice option and had been called up to the senior national team, the Black Stars, during his time at Kotoko.

However, his fall from favour has been swift, and the lack of playing opportunities has affected his prospects both domestically and internationally.

With his departure now looming, attention turns to what lies ahead for the goalkeeper. His representatives remain hopeful of securing a move abroad, with Europe listed as the preferred destination, though no formal offers have yet been made public.

As the Ghanaian season approaches its conclusion, Asare will continue to train with the squad but is not expected to feature in the remaining fixtures unless unforeseen circumstances arise.

His likely exit will leave Kotoko with the task of reshaping their goalkeeping department ahead of the next campaign, while Asare prepares for the next chapter of his career away from the Porcupine Warriors.
