Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong killed in highway robbery attack
Ghanaian football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Dominic Frimpong, who lost his life after sustaining a fatal head injury during an armed attack on his club’s team bus.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening as Berekum Chelsea were returning to Berekum after their Ghana Premier League clash against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park, a match they lost 1-0.
Reports indicate that the team bus was ambushed on the Bibiani–Goaso road near Ahyiresu when armed assailants blocked the route and ordered players and officials to abandon the vehicle.
In the ensuing panic, several members of the squad reportedly fled into nearby bushes in a desperate attempt to escape. Multiple players sustained injuries during the chaos, while Frimpong was shot in the head.
He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead on arrival.
Security personnel are continuing search operations for missing players and officials, while police have launched a manhunt for the attackers, who are still at large.
Frimpong, 20, joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January, a move that was set to keep him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season. He made 13 appearances and scored twice before his tragic passing.
