Claims that Ghanaian international Alexander Djiku is on the verge of a move to Stade Rennais have been firmly denied by sources close to the player, despite recent speculation linking the defender with a return to Ligue 1 this summer.
Reports had circulated suggesting that the 29-year-old centre-back had reached an agreement in principle with Rennes for a summer transfer from Turkish side Fenerbahçe.
However, a representative from Djiku’s camp, speaking exclusively to Africasoccer, dismissed the rumours as premature and inaccurate.
“It is completely false to claim that Djiku is about to leave Fenerbahçe,” the source clarified. “He remains fully committed to the club.
No contact has been made, no discussions have taken place. He is still under contract, and for now, there is nothing concrete regarding a move.”
While the denial pours cold water on suggestions of an imminent transfer, the player’s entourage stopped short of ruling out a future departure.
Djiku’s current contract runs until the summer of 2026, but with just over a year left at the end of this season, speculation is likely to persist, particularly given his performances and experience.
The Ghanaian defender has featured prominently for Fenerbahçe this campaign, making 35 appearances across the Süper Lig, Europa League, and Turkish Cup.
His consistency and composure at the back have not gone unnoticed, and Fenerbahçe head coach José Mourinho is reportedly keen to retain Djiku as part of his core defensive unit at the Ülker Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
Valued at €8.5 million according to Transfermarkt, Djiku’s profile has steadily risen since his arrival in Turkey.
Last season, he also registered 36 appearances in all competitions, underlining his reliability and importance to the squad.
Before his move to Turkey, Djiku built a solid reputation in France. He spent four seasons with RC Strasbourg, tallying 137 matches and scoring four goals.
His earlier years in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 included spells at SM Caen and SC Bastia, where he developed a reputation as a versatile and disciplined defender.
Internationally, Djiku has been a key figure for the Ghanaian national team since making his debut in 2020 during a fixture against Sudan.
Now one of the senior members of the Black Stars, he has accumulated 33 caps and continues to serve as a dependable presence in Ghana’s backline.
Despite recent reports, it appears no formal movement toward a transfer is underway. Rennes, who are reportedly looking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season, may well be monitoring Djiku’s situation.
However, any potential negotiations would require Fenerbahçe’s involvement and likely depend on the club’s willingness to enter talks.
As it stands, the Ghanaian centre-back remains fully focused on his responsibilities in Istanbul.
With the season still ongoing and Fenerbahçe chasing domestic and European success, Djiku’s immediate attention is on helping his current side meet their objectives.
Whether the summer brings fresh developments remains to be seen, but for now, talk of a Ligue 1 return appears speculative at best.
