Denis Odoi has mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Royal Antwerp FC, ending his tenure at the Belgian club a year before it was set to expire.
The 37-year-old defender’s departure, announced on Tuesday, comes due to personal reasons, marking the conclusion of his short stay at Antwerp.
Odoi joined Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2024, bringing with him extensive experience from previous spells in Belgium, the Netherlands, and England, including clubs such as Fulham, Lokeren, and Anderlecht. During his single season at the Bosuilstadion, he featured in 28 matches, contributing one goal and two assists.
In an official statement, Royal Antwerp expressed gratitude for Odoi’s professionalism and dedication throughout the 2024 campaign.
The club thanked him for his contributions on and off the pitch. Speaking about his exit, Odoi cited personal reasons as the foundation for ending his contract early and expressed appreciation for the support he received.
“I thank the club for their understanding and for the trust they have placed in me,” he said. “Thank you also to all the staff members, my teammates, and especially the fans, who have supported me from day one. You are fantastic!”
The amicable split between player and club allows Odoi to focus on matters outside football while also opening the door for Antwerp to adjust their defensive options ahead of the new season.
His departure concludes a career spanning multiple leagues and countries, underscoring his adaptability and professionalism.
Royal Antwerp now face the challenge of replacing an experienced figure in their backline as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
The club’s management has expressed confidence in their squad depth but may look to strengthen further in the transfer market.
Odoi’s decision to step away from Antwerp after just one season reflects the unpredictable nature of professional football careers, where personal circumstances can influence sporting trajectories.
His legacy at the Bosuilstadion will be remembered for his leadership and commitment during a transitional period for the club.
As both parties part ways on good terms, Denis Odoi’s next career moves remain to be seen, with many fans and pundits keen to follow the next chapter for the seasoned Belgian defender.
