Kwesi Appiah, head coach of Sudan’s national team, has expressed pride in leading the war-torn nation to a historic qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Sudan’s achievement marks a significant milestone, as the country overcame immense challenges posed by civil war, which forced the team to play all their qualifiers on foreign soil.
Appiah’s tactical expertise and leadership inspired a team playing not just for victory, but for hope amidst adversity.
Sudan’s path to AFCON qualification came at the expense of Appiah’s homeland, Ghana, adding a bittersweet twist to the achievement.
“I’m actually pleased that, for some time now, the Sudanese people have felt joy in their lives after qualifying for the AFCON after so many years. I’m very proud to be part of this success story,” Appiah told CAF.
A former Black Stars captain, Appiah also led Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Now, he prepares to guide Sudan into Africa’s premier football tournament, carrying the aspirations of a nation seeking unity and joy through sport.
