VfL Bochum midfielder Moritz-Broni Kwarteng has been ruled out indefinitely after sustaining a lateral collateral ligament injury to his knee during a training session on Friday.
The 27-year-old picked up the injury while training with the team ahead of their pre-season camp in Scheffau, Austria, and will now miss the crucial preparation period for the upcoming 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign.
The club confirmed the news on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that Kwarteng would not be part of the squad traveling to Tyrol, where Bochum is holding its summer training camp near the Wilder Kaiser mountains.
The statement did not specify how long the midfielder is expected to be sidelined, with medical assessments still ongoing.
This setback is a significant blow to manager Thomas Letsch’s plans, as Kwarteng had been expected to play a central role in Bochum’s tactical setup for the new season.
Known for his versatility and creativity in the final third, the attacking midfielder had shown promise last season and was tipped to be a key figure in Bochum’s midfield engine.
The timing of the injury could not be worse for the player or the club.
Pre-season training camps are critical for building team cohesion and implementing tactical frameworks, particularly for a side that will be aiming to solidify its place in the Bundesliga following a tense battle for survival last season.
Bochum’s medical team has yet to determine the full extent of the damage to Kwarteng’s knee.
🤕 Gute Besserung, Momo!

However, injuries to the lateral collateral ligament can often result in several weeks, or even months, on the sidelines depending on severity.
The club will now assess its options as it looks to adapt its plans without one of its attacking outlets.
Kwarteng’s absence also places more responsibility on the shoulders of Bochum’s remaining midfielders to step up in his stead during the preparation period and potentially into the early part of the season.
While supporters will hope for a swift recovery, the club is expected to provide further updates once more detailed medical evaluations are completed.
Until then, Kwarteng faces a frustrating period of rehabilitation as he watches from the sidelines.
