Following a press release issued last week, refuting rumors about striker Asamoah Gyan being appointed captain of the Black Stars, the Ghana Football Federation (GFA) reversed its stance this Thursday, officially confirming the information. The GFA’s website now announces that Asamoah Gyan, the striker from Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, has indeed been appointed as the captain of the Ghana team for the upcoming CAN 2013 qualifiers, specifically the match against Malawi scheduled for this Saturday in Accra.
Asamoah Gyan, absent from the national team since CAN 2012 but reinstated during a friendly match against China on August 15, not only brings his goal-scoring prowess but also assumes new responsibilities as the team’s captain. This marks the first occasion that the former Sunderland player will don the captain’s armband during an official national team match. Gyan expressed his happiness about the appointment, stating, “I am happy to have been made captain. This means that I must exhibit exemplary behavior. I count on all my teammates to assist me with this responsibility.”
In his debut as captain, Gyan will deliver a Fair Play message from FIFA (International Association Football Federation). This ceremony will be observed by all the captains of the participating selections in the CAN 2013 qualifiers following the national anthems during the upcoming weekend.
