Ghana reappoint Carlos Queiroz for next phase of Black Stars programme

Ghana have officially reappointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, reversing the Portuguese manager’s decision to step down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with the 73-year-old to resume responsibility for the national team under a new mandate.

“GFA is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Ghana Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme,” the association said in an official statement.

Queiroz previously guided Ghana at the 2026 World Cup, where the team progressed from a group containing England, Croatia and Panama.

Ghana’s campaign came to an end in the round of 32, however, when they were beaten by Colombia.

Under the terms of the contract Queiroz signed before the tournament, which was staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, his appointment was due to end once Ghana were eliminated from the competition.

The former Portugal manager subsequently announced his resignation in a message posted on Instagram.

“To Ghana.. Football, like life, teaches us an everlasting lesson: either you win or you learn. I leave this journey proud of what we achieved, but also with the natural feeling of dissatisfaction of those who always aspired for more,” he wrote.

Despite that announcement, further discussions between Queiroz, the GFA and Ghana’s Ministry of Sports have resulted in an agreement for him to remain in charge as part of a fresh assignment.

The new spell will begin during the next international break, when Ghana start their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Their first fixture is scheduled for 23 September, when they will travel to face Ivory Coast in a challenging group.

The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical ability and previous knowledge of the Ghana squad make him the right candidate to lead the team through the next phase of its programme.

The agreement means Queiroz will continue working with a side he took through the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, despite initially leaving his post immediately after the tournament’s conclusion.

Ghana’s meeting with Ivory Coast will provide the manager with his first opportunity to begin his latest mandate competitively, with qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations now the immediate priority.
