The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that the Ghana Premier League will officially resume on March 7, 2025, following a suspension due to security concerns.
The league was halted after the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Nana Pooley, who was fatally stabbed during a match against Nsoatreman.
The incident raised serious concerns about matchday security, prompting the GFA to put the competition on hold while reviewing safety protocols.
After several weeks of discussions and assessments, the governing body has now scheduled the restart with matchday 23 fixtures set to take place between March 7 and March 10.
Enhanced security measures before restart
The decision to resume the league was reached after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including clubs, security officials, and government representatives.
To ensure a safer environment for players, officials, and fans, the GFA has introduced a series of reinforced security measures.
All stadiums hosting league matches will undergo mandatory safety inspections, conducted jointly by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports, to ensure they meet required security standards.
Additionally, matchday safety training has been implemented for club officials and security personnel to improve crowd control and emergency response measures.
The GFA has also strengthened its collaboration with law enforcement agencies to guarantee better security coordination on matchdays.
These efforts are aimed at restoring public confidence and preventing similar incidents in the future.
Revised fixtures and FA Cup schedule
Alongside the confirmation of the league’s restart, the GFA has also rescheduled matchdays 20, 21, and 22, which will now be played between March and April. In addition, Asante Kotoko’s FA Cup match against Sekondi Eleven Wise has been set for March 12.
With these new measures in place, Ghanaian football fans can now look forward to the resumption of the domestic league, as efforts continue to ensure safety and security at stadiums across the country.
