Grejohn Kyei: Reims’ Rising Star Focused on Club Before Choosing International Path
By BBC Sport
At just 20 years old, Grejohn Kyei is already becoming a standout name in Ligue 1. The Stade de Reims striker has impressed with his recent performances, notably scoring against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on May 23 and providing an assist in last weekend’s win over Bordeaux. His growing influence on the pitch is turning heads—and even his jerseys are flying off the shelves.
Kyei has been part of Reims’ setup since 2010 and signed his first professional contract in April 2014, committing to a three-year deal. His steady rise through the ranks has marked him as one of the most promising young forwards in French football.
Of Ghanaian descent, Kyei is eligible to represent either France or Ghana at international level, but for now, his focus remains firmly at club level. In an interview with FootU21, the Reims forward spoke candidly about his international ambitions.
“I have never had any contact, whether with the French Federation or the Ghana Federation,” Kyei revealed. “If someone calls me, I will think about it. But for the moment, I’m not thinking about it. I think about my club first.”
His preference, however, leans toward the country of his birth.
“I don’t know Ghana very well. I only went there when I was little, a long time ago. So I have a preference for France, where I was born.”
As Reims look to build on a strong start to their season, Kyei’s role in the squad is expected to grow. His mature attitude and focus on club success before national team ambitions reflect a grounded mindset that could serve him well as his career develops.
For now, the young forward remains one to watch, both for Reims supporters and scouts keeping tabs on potential future internationals.
