Nations FC surged to the top of the Ghana Premier League table on Monday after a dominant 4-1 away victory over Legon Cities, whose relegation to the second tier has now been confirmed with three matches left to play.

Kelvin Ampoful opened the scoring in the 29th minute for Nations FC, silencing the home crowd and giving the visitors a deserved lead.

However, Albert Yeboah struck back for Legon Cities ten minutes later, levelling the scoreline just before halftime and offering a glimmer of hope for a side desperate to avoid the drop.

That hope was short-lived. Nations FC returned from the break with renewed determination and reasserted control midway through the second half.

Emmanuel Annor fired them back in front in the 65th minute, before Sadiq Alhassan extended the lead in the 83rd.

Ampoful then returned in stoppage time to score his second of the match, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 triumph.

The result not only propelled Nations FC into first place with 57 points, one clear of closest challengers Gold Stars, but also ended Legon Cities’ survival hopes.

With just 25 points from 31 matches, and sitting 17th on the table, their relegation is now mathematically confirmed.

“We knew the stakes were high and the boys delivered,” said Nations FC head coach Mingle Ocansey after the match. “We’re not celebrating yet—there’s still work to be done—but this result shows our intent.”

Legon Cities become the second team confirmed for relegation this season, joining Nsoatreman FC, who withdrew from the competition earlier in the campaign.

The victory keeps Nations FC firmly in the title race with three rounds remaining, as the battle at the top tightens.

Gold Stars trail by a single point, while Heart of Lions and Asante Kotoko remain in contention, each sitting just three points behind the new leaders.
