Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana joins Sassuolo on loan from Atalanta

Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana has completed a season-long loan move from Atalanta to Sassuolo, keeping him in Serie A for the 2026-27 campaign.

The 23-year-old joined the newly promoted club on transfer deadline day in a deal that includes an option to make the move permanent on a three-year contract.

The switch marks another chapter in Sulemana’s journey through Italian football after spending the second half of last season on loan at Cagliari, having begun the 2025-26 campaign at Bologna before returning to his parent club, Atalanta.

The Sunyani-born midfielder has built his career in Italy since progressing through Hellas Verona’s youth system. He joined Cagliari in 2023 before Atalanta secured his permanent signing a year later for a reported €7.4m.

Despite his experience across several Serie A clubs, Sulemana has yet to feature in the opening weeks of the 2026-27 season, missing both league action and the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds before completing his move to Sassuolo.

A right-footed defensive midfielder, he will hope to establish himself as a regular starter as Sassuolo seek to consolidate their return to Italy’s top flight.

On the international stage, Sulemana made his Ghana debut in June 2024 during a World Cup qualifier against Mali, replacing Salis Abdul Samed late in a dramatic 2-1 victory after Ghana scored in added time.

He has since earned seven appearances for the Black Stars and remains part of the national team’s midfield options.
