Ghana midfielder Daniel Kofi-Kyereh set for Freiburg departure
Ghana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh is expected to depart German outfit Freiburg at the end of the season.
The Black Stars midfielder, who joined Freiburg from St. Pauli in the summer of 2022, initially arrived with strong expectations after establishing himself as one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in the German second tier.
However, his momentum was brutally halted by a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury early in his Freiburg career, ultimately sidelining him for an extended period and significantly limited his ability to establish himself in the first team.
Kyereh’s time in Freiburg has been defined less by performances on the pitch and more by rehabilitation and recovery.
Despite the setbacks, Freiburg are understood to have supported his recovery process throughout his rehabilitation. His recent return to action, particularly with the club’s U23 side in the Regionalliga Südwest, has been viewed as a positive step in his attempt to rebuild match fitness and regain rhythm.
Kyereh’s performances at youth level demonstrated encouraging signs of sharpness and confidence, but not enough time remains in his contract cycle for a full reintegration into the Bundesliga squad setup.
Per reports in Germany, both parties have agreed to go their separate ways at the end of the current campaign. He is reportedly not expected to feature again for Freiburg’s senior team this season as plans are already being shaped for his departure.
The decision marks the end of a difficult but professionally managed chapter for both player and club, with Kyereh now entering a crucial stage of his career where playing time and continuity will be key priorities.
Despite his injury struggles, Kyereh remains an important figure within the Ghana national football team setup, where he has earned 18 caps for the Black Stars. His experience and creativity have previously made him a valuable option in midfield, particularly in attacking transitions.
The midfielder has also expressed his desire to feature at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, a goal that will likely influence his next career move as he seeks consistent playing time at club level.
With his departure from Freiburg now expected, Kyereh is likely to attract interest from several clubs across Europe.
