Former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien has urged Ghanaian football fans to look ahead following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana endured a disappointing qualifying campaign, finishing at the bottom of their group with just three points from six matches—managing three draws and suffering three defeats.
This marks the first time in two decades that the four-time African champions will miss the prestigious tournament.
In an interview with Sporty FM, the ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid star expressed his surprise at the Black Stars’ struggles but emphasized the importance of moving forward.
“I would say I was surprised we didn’t make it to the AFCON, but there’s a whole lot going on with the Black Stars,” Essien said.
“It is sad but we have to move on. What has happened has happened, and sometimes it’s better not to qualify than to just add to the numbers.
“If you qualify you have to compete,” the 2012 Champions League winner added.
The Black Stars will aim to bounce back when they return to action in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They face Chad on Friday before taking on Madagascar on Monday, March 24.
