Ghana legend Ibrahim Sunday blames Black Stars decline on lack of succession plan

Former Ghana international Ibrahim Sunday has cited lack of succession plan for the Black Stars unimpressive performance in recent times.

The West African powerhouse has been criticized following a terrible run in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana, who are four-time winners of the AFCON will for the first time in 20-years miss the tournament to be staged in Morocco.

Ghana recorded three draws and three defeats after six games, finishing bottom of Group F with three points.

Speaking in an interview, the one-time African Footballer of the Year pointed at lack of succession plan for the Black Stars poor showing in recent times.

“The Black Stars is struggling because we didn’t plan for the future. We enjoyed the Black Stars in previous years without putting in place a succession plan. We should have introduced players into the team for the future” he said.

The Black Stars will aim to put up an improved performance when they face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the future of Otto Addo, who is the head coach of the team, is yet to be decided by the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association.
